Wide Street Commission Maps

Wide Street Commission Map showing Bagott St.The Wide Street Commission was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1757 to reduce city-centre congestion, and to widen and develop thoroughfares of Dublin city centre. The work of the Wide Street Commission (1757-1851) had a lasting impact on the fabric of Dublin City and its built heritage. In 2011, with the support of the Heritage Council of Ireland, conservation work was carried out on 30 maps from the Wide Street Commission Collection. This exhibition will be available online free of charge and will illustrate the intricate work of the Conservator in cleaning, repairing and restoring these historically important records.

Dublin City Archives hold a collection of almost 900 manuscript maps documenting the city before, during and after the work of the commission. View a sample of conserved Wide Street Commission Maps.
